Horace Wells (1815-1848)

Wells was an American dentist and the first practitioner to publicly advocate the use of nitrous oxide as an anesthetic. After chronic use of chloroform -- and the associated cognitive impairment -- he threw acid onto the clothing two women and later ended his own life while in police custody.
